I, for one, Welcome Our New NCAA Power Index Overlords
This is a follow up to my 3 April post “News – New Selection Process for Division III Championships”
In a recent interview with Denison’s Head Men’s Coach, Brandon Bianco, we talked about a proposal by the NCAA Management Council “That the NCAA Power Index (NPI) be adopted as the selection metric for selecting non-automatic qualifiers for the championship field for Division III team sports.”
You can find the portion of the interview where we dive deep into the subject. What was pretty clear from the interview, the lack of transparency and communication was surprising. Especially considering a measure that would have such a clear and long standing impact on determining the selection process for the NCAA Tournament.
Meanwhile, in what seems like a Friday night new dump, the DIII Management Committee announced a number of changes. In addition to expanding the bracket size for a number of sports, they approved some NIL protections, the adoption of a Women’s wrestling tournament and other interpretations and playing rules.
And then there was this throw away line …
For something that is set to have a major impact, you would think that there would be a bit more of a discussion and maybe disclosure for how this would be rolled out. But no.
Not surprisingly, this change will be taking place this fall. May we live in interesting times…..
SC.
