So, in light of the D3Boards, a number of folks asked me about forums.  So this morning, I spun up what you see.  Couple of things to keep in mind.

1.  I have no idea what I am doing, so if it changes 50x to revert back to something you saw 47x iterations back.

2.  For now, consider this temporary.  If the D3 Boards come back up, I will defer back to them.  If they don't I will look to create a separate page, D3FanBoards or some such so that I can add different sports.  Sort of like the current set up (D3Soccer and then D3Boards).

3.  I am not looking to revolutionize anything, just looking to have a place for people to interact.

4.  I will not be selling any data, etc.  I don't even know how I would go about doing that.

5.  I will not be the hall monitor.  If you get out of hand, I won't bother, but I will just block you.  If I can figure out how to give yellows/reds, then I would go as far as that, but right now, I have too much on my plate to deal with petulant posters who think they know everything and hide behind something anonymous handle.

With that, let's get at it.

Just in case anyone is interested, here is the latest (posted this afternoon) on the state of the D3Boards from the D3Hoops guys, who are probably chomping at the bit to get them up before the end of the season and conference tourneys/NCAA selections begin.  At least with D3 soccer, this would be a pretty quiet period anyway (if we didn't have SimpleCoach to generously save us from picking up new hobbies or doing chores/projects around the house - I at least cleaned out the gutters and put out some more buckets under the new leaks we've discovered with the non-stop downpours in SoCal the last 72 hours).

Short story is the boards crashed (pretty old software). Since then the D3hoops.com team has been working to recover lost data (all of the years of posts) and get the boards back online.

I figured they are trying to fix it, question I have, and not knowing anything, is it worth fixing?  I get the destination but the board itself, is the technology worth fixing?

It sounds like what they are trying to do is retrieve the old posts and other data (e.g., post counts/usernames + passwords) and transfer them to the new technology they may be using to create version 2.0 of the boards.  There is a lot of unofficial history of D3 on those boards that people probably want, plus people may be more inclined to stick with the board if they can retain their status and log-in information.

New update comes up when you check the D3boards page.  To me, that sounds like a 2nd best solution if it is an "older" backup because the 1st best solution (starting it exactly where it left off) has failed.

Maintenance Mode

Okay faithful users...we're attempting to restore an older backup of the database...news will be posted once we're back!

Thanks @Kuiper.  Doesn't fill me with confidence so now I am trying to figure out should I just commit to keeping the D3Soccer.Fans Boards or not.  Not sure.  Have held back on adding some new features since I don't want to add something id the D3Boards go online again.

Hence the poll on the homepage.

Totally get that.  The hard part is that for DIII soccer fans this would be a dead period on the Boards regardless, so not that many people have been interested enough (or sicko enough) to come over here, register, and start posting or participating in polls.

@kuiper Agreed.  If this lasts until the fall, I guess we will see.  Again, not sure what to do here.  And one of things I thought about is what if they can't get the boards up again?

I saw your poll and that the old boards are up.  Here's my take.  I definitely think we need your site (especially since the D3Soccer page is no longer being updated), but I think the combined board is better for three reasons:

1.  There are too many old-time frequent posters on the D3Board (Gregory Sanger to name one) who we would likely lose if we separated.  These are the guys who are fans of their schools and conferences and follow whatever sport is in-season.  I think it may trace back to the old days when some players went D3 because they could continue playing multiple sports, but some fans wander over just around tournament time when things get interesting.  It's valuable to be in one spot where they can float back and forth among the boards.  We would lose a lot of institutional history without them.  Plus, we would lose a lot of older D3 soccer fans period.  They likely aren't surfing the web to find you and registering new user names and passwords.

2.  It would probably divide up the D3 soccer fanbase for at least awhile unless you got them to take down the D3 soccer forum on the boards altogether.  I would cross-post things in both places, but some will only post there and others will only post here.  There aren't enough active posters in D3 soccer to really support robust discussion on two boards (although it would allow you to institute a system of promotion-relegation! 😉 ).

3.  I think there are a lot of issues common to D3 that are better discussed on a board with fans of all divisions.  I have posted about a few of them - the Dartmouth NLRB decision giving their basketball players employee status for purposes of having a union vote, NIL and revenue effects, Flo Sports and the future of pay wall streaming of games, general NCAA issues relating to the support of D3 tournaments, the perilous economic state of some colleges in D3 and what it means for the economics of D3.

One further thought on your question now that we've had a couple of days with both boards being active.  Although I think the D3Sports boards are probably better for a number of items, particularly discussions of games or school-based issues that benefit from a lot of eyeballs and quick reactions, I think the D3Soccer.Fans boards are better for discussion of your blog-style posts and columns on this site, the SimpleCoach podcast/youtube segments, such as interviews, Fields of Dreams, Injury Time, or the New Show (if you and Paul Newman are still continuing that), and for things like polls.  It just makes more sense to discuss your long-form ideas at the same site where they have been posted so people can read/view/listen and react in the same place.

In theory, that could be accomplished by the comment section attached to the post, but for some reason I think that has been difficult.  For one, it seems to require you to log in again even if you are already logged in for purposes of the boards (although perhaps I'm wrong about that).  Moreover, not all of your material actually has a comment section attached to it that is on the site.  Only the site blog posts have them.  You can comment on your interviews etc on YouTube, but not everyone watches them on YouTube and then you have to register and create a user name for those, which loses the benefit of audience and a shared forum for discussion and a shared basis for knowing people online to the extent people have different user names (which might make sense if your Boards name only makes sense on a D3 soccer board and not on a YouTube platform).  Either having a message board for all of your various posts/videos or having links from all of them to comment sections on a single site would allow for a fuller discussion/comments etc.

There is value to you, however, in cross-posting and having discussion of your materials on the D3Boards if it gets you more eyeballs than it might here.  Therefore, if you would prefer to move discussion to that forum, that's certainly fine.
