Saint Francis University to Move to Division III in 2026

Saint Francis University (SFU) has officially announced its transition from NCAA Division I to Division III, a move set to take effect in the 2026-27 academic year.

Like all schools trying to navigate through the changes… and challenges with so much changing in collegiate athletics, St. Francis has decided to join D3 and the President Athletic Conference. SFU will maintain its affiliation with the Northeast Conference (NEC) until June 30, 2026. Thereafter, the university will begin the reclassification process to Division III and join the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC), aiming for full membership by the 2029-30 academic year

The University said increasing complexities of Division I athletics, such as the transfer portal and pay-for-play dynamics, as factors influencing this strategic shift. This move mirrors similar decisions by other institutions, like the University of Hartford, which transitioned to Division III in recent years.
