Denison @ Mary Washington Sweet 16 Match Up

Game in Fredericksburg, MD. Looks like a lovely day for a soccer game.

Denison is out of the gate with a lot of energy, and get’s it first corner 1 minute in. Mary Washington is trying to react and get some control of the ball. UMW looks a little uncertain, or nervous on the ball. Think the pace needs to even out and and the nerves burn off. When Denison is doing a better job in possession, but space it tough to find in the final third.

Denison is defending and pressing better than UMW. UMW is looking for ways and it starts with switching the point of attack quickly.

25 minutes in and its a bit of a chess match, but UMW looks to be taking control more and more. The game has shifted and Denison has taken back a bit of the possession and getting forward. I am sure Denison is aware that UMW turns it on in the second half. If they could get a goal before half, Denison would be in a good spot.

Denison seems to be looking for a call in the box if there is any contact. Not sure this is the strategy they want to rely on. UMW is really just defending deep and countering when they can. But in this stretch, they really don’t have much of a game being put together.

Start of the second and Denison has its first look 30 seconds in. UMW is looking to move the ball with some pace and get forward with more urgency.

Denison is doing a great job in possession, UMW is having a hard time getting the ball and actually doing something with it. Denison is looking the better, but quite a bit. Denison just had a goal taken away. Looks like for a foul?? Not sure. 30 left in the half.

16 minutes left and UMW seems to be getting a hold of the ball a bit more and getting forward with more intent. Denison has owned a good part of the game, but UMW may be finding it’s rhythm. Still tied with 9 minutes left.

This is looking like a game that will play out OT and go to PKs…..

I type that UMW had a great opportunity on goal that was saved by the Denison keeper.

And if you are need to know, Williams and Washington & Lee are all tied up at 1. On the women’s side, Colby and WashU are tied at 0.

That’s a wrap. 0-0 after 90 minutes of play. And here we are going to overtime.

Mary Washington has come out and wins a corner creates a little chaos ball, but Denison clears it out. Denison doesn’t look like they have the energy like they had before. UMW is making them chase a lot.

Wow. Just wow.

Ball floated in, and the UMW keeper comes out for it. Looks like he punches the ball poorly and ball goes back post and headed in. Denison moves on.

Mary Washington 0, Denison 1.

You know what, they took the game to Mary Washington, and not sure UMW figured out how to play until it was too late. Denison was not lucky, they earned this one.
